The Benefits of Replacing Your Furnace and Air Conditioning Units at the Same Time

Furnace and Air Conditioner

Replacing your air conditioner and furnace together can seem like an expensive undertaking, but  it actually saves you money in the long term.

THE SYSTEMS COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER

A central air conditioning system and a furnace share the same blower, or air handler. This permits both systems to operate more effectively while using less energy.

ENERGY EFFICIENT

The air conditioning and heating systems manufactured today are much more energy efficient than the systems of 15 or 20 years ago. Consumers are able to easily check the Seasonal Energy Ratings. In newer systems, they have a seasonable energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of no less than 13, which is the minimum the government allows for cooling units. The higher the rating a cooling system has, the more energy efficient it is.

With respect to furnaces, the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) is a measurement of the furnace’s seasonal performance. In newer systems, a rating of 90 percent or more is recommended. Heat pumps or boilers will have a different value.

Furnaces have a life expectancy of approximately 15 to 20 years. Keep in mind this is also determined by the quality, maintenance, and efficiency of the unit.

Another plus to purchasing an AC unit and heating system together is that they have been specifically designed to work together, which affords both units a longer life.

COST EFFICIENT

When the furnace and AC are installed at the same time, they are both under warranty in the event something should need to be repaired. Manufacturers may not be obligated to honor the warranty of a new heating or cooling system when it is combined with an older one.

Also, installing both units together saves money; rather than paying for two installations, you pay for only one.

HOME RESALE VALUE

Potential buyers look for several things when buying a new home. Not only do they want newer appliances, but they also want to be secure in the knowledge that they are purchasing a home with updated heating and air conditioning. The home inspection covers this aspect. People want to know that their family will be warm in the winter months and cool in the steamy months of summer, and that they won’t be stuck with paying for a new system after they purchase the home, or for inefficient energy costs. Replacing both systems with active warranties ups your resale value.

To make a well-informed decision, it is best to learn about the newest technology and have an expert opinion from a Shipton’s heating and air conditioning specialist. They can help you decide what is best for you and your home.
