1. Find the drafts
Your first goal will be to find out where air is leaking in and out of your house. Eliminating drafts can reduce your energy use by as much as 30 percent!

- Baseboards, attic entry ways, doors, frames
- Around windows or skylights
- Gaps around fixtures, window units, chimneys, vents, outlets

2. Evaluate your insulation

You want to be sure filters are clean, ducts are leak-free, and your heating and cooling are performing at system capacity. 4. Audit your home energy use

Things to look for:
- Lights left on when no one is home or in the room
- Energy-draining light bulbs (switch to CFLs or LEDs where possible)
- Appliances that are left plugged in but are rarely used
- Electronics (including home entertainment systems) that are left plugged in when not in use
You can begin to scale back on home energy use by:
- installing motion sensors for room lighting
- using solar or motion detection lighting for your home’s exterior
- installing energy-use monitors to find out which devices represent the greatest energy draw on a daily or monthly basis
- Unplugging appliances and devices when they are not in use
