Not Quite Winter, Not Quite Spring: How to Help Your HVAC Cope

This is the time of year we get what experts call “transitional weather.” Some days it feels more like winter. Then some days make us think spring has finally arrived!

In your home or workplace, this can mean you may be experiencing a bit of a dance as you shift between using your heater and your A/C. Or maybe you try to avoid powering up the A/C just yet by opening windows on sunnier, warmer days.

Either way, transitional seasons can be a trying time for indoor temperature control efforts. This is especially true in the later evening and early morning when it can seem like winter temperatures have returned.

So how can you help your heating and cooling system cope with these changing weather patterns? Read on for some of our favorite transitional weather tips!

Do Some Advance HVAC Spring Cleaning

We know spring cleaning is nobody’s favorite activity. But here, the goal is to ensure you are getting maximum efficiency whether you are using your heater or your air conditioner on any given day.

Clean your HVAC components

Start by cleaning around your HVAC equipment. If you have covered your system’s exterior components for the winter, remove the cover and inspect the unit for any damage. Rake away any fallen tree limbs, debris, and detritus—these represent a fire and mould hazard, especially as the warm season returns.

Wipe down your fans

Give your ceiling and floor fans a good dusting. If you have directional switches on your ceiling fans and have turned them to the “winter” setting, now is a good time to reverse the switch to get more cooling power.

Clean around windows and doors

Clean around your windows and doors next, removing dust, debris, insect nests, and leaves that may have collected during winter’s storms. Not only does this debris interfere with a weather-tight seal, but it can also represent a mould or fire risk.

Replace filters

Clean out and/or replace all filters, including your A/C and furnace filters, air purifier or filtration filters, and dryer lint traps. This helps remove dust, debris, pollen, and allergens from your indoor air supply and also gives your HVAC equipment an efficiency boost.

Schedule Your Seasonal Inspection & Maintenance Check-Up

In an ideal world, your air conditioning and heating components would each get a safety and maintenance inspection at least once each year. We know time can get away from you and this doesn’t always happen.

But there are a few important reasons to schedule these inspections and maintenance check-ups now, during the transitional season.

  1. If your components are still under warranty, you may void your warranty benefits if you don’t schedule an annual routine inspection and maintenance appointment!
  2. Your hard-working heating system may have developed some quirks or kinks during the long winter, and now is a great time to get those repaired, because fall will be back all too soon.
  3. Your air conditioner is nearly up to bat for the hot summer season and you want to make sure it will work smoothly during the hot months when you need it most.

Retrofit Your HVAC System With a Heat Recovery Ventilator

One of the most challenging aspects of seasonal transitional weather is the varying humidity levels. Some days may be cold and dry, reminding you of cold and flu season. Other days may be wet and muggy, making you think of hay fever and mosquito season.

But inside your home, you shouldn’t be thinking of anything related to humidity—and you certainly won’t be once you install a heat recovery ventilator system!

This simple, essential HVAC component is so useful at reducing your energy bills, sending mould and mildew packing, and improving your overall indoor air quality that it is a now-required component for all new residential construction in Ontario province. This new requirement is part of an ongoing effort to increase energy efficiency in newly built homes by 15 percent or more.

Happily, even if your home is now several years old, a heat recovery ventilator can bring these kinds of energy efficiency savings to you, too. Saving up to 15 percent on your heating and cooling bills can put hundreds of dollars per year back into your pocket. This means the heat recovery ventilator will easily pay for itself within the first year of installation.

Our sister company, Clean Air Solutions Hamilton, specializes in improving residential and commercial indoor air quality through installation of heat recovery ventilators, HEPA air filtration systems, UV air purification systems, indoor air duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, and other high-quality, affordable indoor air quality aids and services.
